If your solid wood flooring is starting to show signs of wear and tear, you may begin to hear squeaking noises when treading in certain areas. It is important that once you start hearing squeaks you fix the problem as soon as possible. If the squeaks are left they can become considerably worse and cause more damage.
To eliminate the squeaks, you need to locate the joists. To do this tap on the floor try and listen for a more solid sound compared to a hollow sound. The more solid sound means that the joist is under the wood. If you're having trouble using this technique, an electric stud finder can also be used to locate the joist.
Once you've located the joists mark the centres with masking tape. To secure the loose boards get a very heavy weight and place it on top of the squeaking area of the marked joists on the solid wood flooring. Then press the flooring against the joists, as this position should stop the floor from squeaking. To make this more permanent, use a spiral-flooring nail and hammer it into the floor at an angle. Once you've finished driving the nails into the floor, use a wax putty stick to cover the nails until the nail heads are completely covered. In doing this your floor should be squeak free.
