Hand-scraped floors - What are they?

Although it's become quite a popular choice of wood flooring in the past couple of years, many will still be unaware of what a hand-scraped floor is.

Extremely similar to distressed wood, hand scraping is the method employed by a manufacturer to make the wood used in the flooring look much older than it actually is.

Whereas the aged look of a distressed wood floor is created by a machine, hand scraping is, as its title suggests, carried out entirely by hand. Only by looking closely at the surface will you be able to tell the difference between the types of flooring - due to the different patterns that the hand scraped method creates.

As a method carried out by hand, flooring that has been hand scraped can be quite costly compared to flooring that's been distressed by machine.

However, it can be guaranteed that hand scraping will leave the flooring with a number of uniquely rustic features - features that just can't be replicated by a machine.
