Give wood flooring a smooth finish with a transition piece
Having a home floored entirely with one type of flooring, wood flooring for example, is extremely uncommon.
Rooms will often contain different flooring types – maybe solid wood in the lounge and laminate in the hallway. Transition pieces are the ideal addition to fill any gaps between the differing floors – they can also limit the possibility of tripping over too.
Installing transition pieces isn't difficult, and with this in mind, here is a short guide on how to do so:
- Using a tape measure, measure the gap for the transition and then match this to the transition piece.
- Make a pencil mark across where the piece needs to be cut.
- It can then be cut to size using a power saw or jigsaw. The transition width should ideally fit the space in the same way the boards do – if the boards either side are level. If using an overlapping transition, it must really cover the floor by half an inch.
- Apply wood glue to the transition's underside and fit into position; with overlap transitions it's important not to get glue on section covering the floor.
- The transition piece should then be nailed down with finishing nails – with each nail spaced 18 inches apart. Cover any exposed nail heads with wood putty and sand once dry to give a clean finish.
