Get the right marquee floor

With the summer sun making outdoor parties a great option over the next few months, you may be thinking of setting up a marquee or covered area for your garden guests.

But it can be difficult to decide what kind of flooring to use.

First off, you need to work out how level your garden is - small lumps or bumps can easily be filled in to ensure your flooring is flat. But don't expect to be able to flatten out a hilly area or sudden slope. Plan around the shape of your open space.

Laying a tarpaulin or groundsheet under the flooring will stop water seeping through, provide a layer of insulation and prevent potential echoing.

The best material for an outdoor marquee is usually wood. You can get huge plywood sheets, or go for something slightly classier in the form of hardwood to create a 'dance floor' effect.

Cork or matting can also be used, but make sure your foundations are strong enough to support the material.
