Four don'ts for Hardwood flooring
Hardwood flooring is an expensive investment so ensuring that it is maintained with care is crucial if it's to have a good lifespan.
Although there are a number of things that you can do to help keep the floor looking great, here is a four-part list of the “don'ts” with hardwood flooring:
- Don't apply vinegar or wax and oil-based cleaning agents: Although vinegar can be used on laminate flooring, it will etch the surface of a hardwood floor. Meanwhile agents that are wax or oil-based will leave a residue on the surface; preventing the polyurethane from having it's proper shine
- Don't allow large puddles to sit for any great period of time: The winter months will often cause hardwood flooring to shrink; creating gaps in the boards. Any sitting water will seep between the boards, swelling and in the long run discolouring the wood.
- Don't use a dirty mop: Always ensure the mop used to clean the wood flooring is clean; any dirt or debris in the mop will undoubtedly scratch the floor and harm the finish.
- Don't drag furniture across the floor: Heavy furniture such as sofa's or coffee tables can cause nasty indentations in the wood, as well as scratches. If furniture has to be moved, ensure there is a soft material underneath (such as specialised rubber feet) to limit the potential of any damage.
