Those who employ the services of a specialist carpet cleaner are likely to hear about the environmentally-friendly practices now being adopted throughout the flooring industry, according to a carpet cleaning company.
With many domestic and commercial properties having flooring surfaces replaced, there is often a large amount of waste carpet material left behind – around 420,000 tonnes per year.
Whilst the vast majority of this waste may end up in landfill sites, an increasing amount is being directed to recycling facilities – around 10 per cent of all waste carpet was reused in 2010.
Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), the organisation responsible for this particular scheme, is hoping to see the figure rise to 12 per cent for 2011.
CRUK director Laurance Bird believes people are becoming more open to various recycling options.
He said: “In general, consumers are more environmentally-aware and would prefer to see their waste carpet recycled and put to good second use, rather than just landfilled.”
