Damaged vinyl flooring? Simply patch it up.

Vinyl flooring is traditionally a popular choice in the kitchen, mainly because of its durability.

Problems can occur though; but it's easy to fix gouges, rip and typical wear and tear by patching your floor.

  • The first step ideally requires excess vinyl flooring left over from the initial installation; however if this isn't possible, you can cut a piece from a hidden area to overcome the problem. Cut a patch, larger than the area you aim to repair. Tape the newly cut patch to the damaged area – ensuring that any patterns are correctly aligned.
  • Using a metal ruler as a guide, use a knife to cut through the two layers of vinyl flooring – ensure the blade is new and also firm, for a clean cut. Pull the replacement patch away and use a putty knife to remove the damaged section. A chisel should be used to scrape off any hardened adhesive from the substrate surface.
  • Before installing, check that the patch is a correct fit. Once this is determined, the patch can be installed by applying adhesive – and spreading using a 2mm spreader. Use a rolling pin to get the patch into position, wiping up any adhesive coming up from the seam. Leave for 30 minutes and then apply a seam coater to give a clean finish.
