Converting your loft

Some houses have lofts or attics which are big enough to be changed into another room.

A loft conversion can be a great way to add value to your home, whilst giving your family space, or providing more room for tenants.

If you're planning to change your loft or attic into a bedroom, make sure you know the building regulations relating to your house, and check whether the work you plan requires planning permission. If it does, be sure to get it approved by the local planning committee before commencing work, as they do have powers to make you reverse any work you did without consent.

Once the paperwork's out the way, you need to decide what floor to go for. Many lofts aren't fitted with floorboards strong enough to carry much weight, so it's worth thinking about the base for your room.

There are some bespoke loft flooring panels available, which you can use to form the bottom of your floor, and then add a covering, such as laminate or vinyl, to provide your favoured finish.

Make sure the floor reaches the eaves of the space and don't use hammers on nails into the floor as it could cause problems underneath.

Instead, slot the panels together and countersink screws into the joists below the boards to make your floor secure. Make sure you distribute the weight evenly and once fitted, you can add your preferred finish.
