Buying a wood floor sealant

In order for any solid wood flooring to have a greater level of protection, it must be sealed. Whilst applying a sealant to a floor is straight forward enough, the process of choosing one that is compatible with a specific floor can be difficult.

With this in mind, we've produced a list of tips to take into account when choosing a sealant for your wood flooring:

Step 1 - What type of wood floor do you have? - An extremely simple step, you just have to know which wood your floor is made of. Different sealants are manufactured to work with specific woods - making getting this step correct vitally important.

Step 2 - Measure your floor - Take down the dimension of your room - the width and length - and multiple to get the square footage. Knowing how big your room is will allow you to buy the correct volume of sealant.

Step 3 - Consult your DIY/Hardware store - If at any point you become stuck don't be afraid to ask an expert; there is bound to be an employee with an expertise in wood flooring at your local DIY store - and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Step 4 - Buying the sealant - Should you choose not to take step 3, you should remember that an indoor sealant is what's needed for the wood floor - outdoor sealants should be avoided for this kind of job.

Step 5 - Gloss Levels - Another factor you should consider when buying the sealant is the gloss level - though really it's down to personal preference. If you want your flooring to have a shiny appearance, then a high gloss sealant is for you. For a less shiny finish choose a low gloss sealant instead.
