Biggest risk to hardwood floors is water damage

Homeowners are being warned to take extra care over their solid wood floors when it comes to contact with water.

Although great for cleaning up accidental spillages extra care is needed when water comes into contact with the hardwood floor surface.

Using water and cleaning products on accidental spills can cause damage, so it is good to know the best ways to ensure your hardwood floors are looking their best.

Make sure that any mop used to clean the floor is adequately wringed out for excess water and that substances such as floor cleaner are used to a minimum.

A hardwood flooring specialist commented: “The first step is to remove the water if any is still present. After the floor is completely dry it should go back to being flat depending on how long the water has been laying on the floor.

“Once your floor is flat again, as long as no staining has taken place, you should be able to screen, fill and re-coat to fix the floor.”

Another important point is to remember to follow manufacturers guidelines when using cleaning substances to ensure health and safety are put first.
