One common error made by many people, when laying various types of flooring, is not ensuring that the moisture levels in the subfloor are tested beforehand – but it's a step that should not be ignored.
In the event that moisture is present in the subfloor, a DPM (damp proof membrane) will be an imperative purchase.
Moisture levels should ideally be tested by professionals, and are determined by the humidity and temperature of a room.
Excessive moisture will cause wood flooring to swell, which can lead to warping and discolouration; placing the flooring in the room where it's to be installed will give it a period to adapt to the conditions - somewhat helping to prevent the aforementioned problems.
Though getting a professional in to measure moisture levels may seem like an unwanted hassle, it is better to be a 100 per cent sure before installing an expensive new wood flooring, rather than to see it damaged by avoidable excessive moisture levels.
