Bamboo is a new flooring alternative

When choosing the right new hard wood flooring or laminate floor quite often the nature of the wood should be considered and bamboo is fast becoming a choice that all manufactures should consider.

Known for its durability and its green impact on the environment, leading flooring manufacturers should be made aware of the benefits of bamboo which is often reason many avoid using the product due to lack of knowledge.

Ann Knight, executive vice president and global brand director for a leading bamboo manufacturer said: “Moso bamboo is the best choice for flooring,” she said. “It takes five-and-a-half to six years to reach maturity—and, when properly harvested, traditional (vertical/flat grains) bamboo flooring can average 25% harder than red oak. Bamboo flooring of lesser quality may be as soft as pine or fir and appear grey or dull if the wrong species were used or the bamboo was harvested too early.”

Because bamboo is essentially a grass, it could be believed to be softer than other wood alternatives and there have been questions raised over its durability. But according to Knight these issues don't reflect its use and choosing the correct bamboo it key.

It could be the best alternative to traditional flooring options for many in the hard wood flooring trade.
