Alleviating solid wood flooring squeaks

Solid wood flooring provides an undoubted element of beauty within the home.

Over time, however, if your floor is not maintained properly, you may begin to notice the sound of squeaking.

If you can access the underside of your floor, you could alleviate this irritation for good - and here is a simple guide on how you can do so:

Step 1-

First isolate the area of your flooring that is producing the squeak. Having done this you will need to find the joists. To do this, tap the floor; if a solid sound is produced you will have located the joist - which will be present underneath where you've tapped. Alternatively an electronic stud finder should make the task easier.

Step 2-

Now you've located the joists, measure from the distance from the centre of the joists to the wall. The centers should be marked with a piece of masking tape.

Step 3-

Place a weight on the problematic area of flooring - this should push the flooring right down against the joist. In this position the flooring should be prevented from squeaking.

To ensure this remains permanent, drive a spiral flooring nail through the floor - at an angle - into the joist.

Step 4-

To prevent these nails from impeding the overall appearance of your flooring, take a wax putty and smear across the nails, working to cover the heads. Wipe away any excess with a cloth.
