Oak wood flooring is an extremely desirable material for the home. Its high level of tanning content gives it an ideal resistance against potential fungal attack.
However, one of the main reasons for laying an oak floor is the high level of flexibility it offers, with a variety of finishes and colours.
Once the oak is fully sanded back to a bare stage, the colour can be changed using a stain.
Water based and oil based stains are the most commonly used – the former allowing the chance to apply a finish more quickly, whilst the latter takes more time to dry.
The most typical ways of finishing the floor come via the applications of varnish, oil or wax.
Varnish will provide a finish that's not only durable, but also long-lasting.
Oil, especially of the Danish variety, will give the floor a fantastic natural look – but be warned; it will need the odd re-application to ensure it remains at its best.
Wax offers a number different colours to provide a warm finish and in some cases can be good against hard wear.
