Written quotations are the golden rule of home improvement, says expert

Homeowners looking to renovate their properties by placing laminate flooring or other value-adding features should get a written quotation no matter how small the job, claims home improvement expert David Snell.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Snell also said that reputation is one of the best ways of seeking out reputable tradesman.

He claimed that previous clients should be sought out and consulted before homeowners decide to hire anyone.

While he conceded that getting everything in writing was difficult on smaller jobs, he recommended writing to the firm to make the understanding of the price and contract clear. He advised being as inclusive as possible when detailing the work involved in larger jobs.

For smaller work however, Mr Snell believes that being "loose" with details has its advantages. This means that, should a tradesman quote for all their work, they cannot later single out parts of the job with a view to charging extra.

Mr Snell's advice comes after the National Home Improvement Council predicted a boom in home improvement at the end of summer.
