Women 'not intimidated by home improvements'

Female householders are not scared of handling home improvements themselves, according to new research.

A survey by online shutter retailer thecaliforniacompany.co.uk found that 90 per cent of women own power tools, while more than two-thirds stated that they carry out DIY in their home.

The poll discovered that older women are keener to muck in with home improvements, while the younger generation prefer to handle the design and style of upgrades before bringing in professionals.

Almost three-quarters of women in their 40s said they do DIY, with 95 per cent of this age group owning power tools.

Sam Tamlyn of thecaliforniacompany.co.uk said the internet could help to explain why women are now more confident with DIY, adding: "Gone are the days when you had to struggle with complicated instruction leaflets, you can now Google the task in hand for a wealth of easy-to-follow advice."

Earlier this month, Sir Paul McCartney told Radio 4's Today programme that he loves DIY and often shops for home improvements in his spare time.
