Well-planned home improvements 'can add value'

Property owners can increase the value of their home by carrying out home improvements that are well planned.

This is the view of Sam Schneiderman, broker-owner of Greater Boston Home Team, who stated in a blog for the Boston Globe that the return of investment depends on the work carried out.

He explained that some home improvements are likely to be planned with an eye on improving the lifestyle of a homeowner, without considering any potential future buyers of the property.

Mr Schneiderman said wine cellars and swimming pools would come in this bracket of home improvements that do not necessarily appeal to all buyers and may not increase a house's value.

"Energy-efficient windows and heating systems are big pluses that enhance the marketability of a property but are unlikely to recoup their full cost," he added.

Last month, the coalition government pledged its support to green home improvements, explaining that its Green Deal will help property owners to carry out work to their residence to save money on their energy bills.
