'Wall and room preparation is key' to home improvement

The importance of preparing a room and its walls before conducting work to it has been highlighted by one home improvement expert.

Managing director of the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon Tim Doherty said that renovators should bear in mind the choice of colour and technical application before beginning work.

"It is wise to learn the basics before you start painting or putting up wallpaper - the key is wall and room preparation," he said.

Mr Doherty went on to highlight the importance of DIY in the kitchen, stating that thousands of pounds could be saved by homeowners ripping out and installing a new one themselves.

His advice echoes the sentiments of Richard Joseph co-director and designer for interior design company Joseph Joseph, who recently claimed that the kitchen is becoming increasingly important as a leisure area.

Mr Doherty also claimed that homeowners who lack DIY skills can still save money by tackling simple jobs, such as installing wood flooring, themselves and then hiring professionals to finish the work.
