Vanilla Ice takes to renovation

Robert Van Winkle, better known as rap star Vanilla Ice, has told of his new career as a full-time renovator.

In a recent article for the New York Times, columnist Tim McKeough spoke to the former rapper about the launch of his new renovation-based reality TV show The Vanilla Ice Project.

Van Winkle explained how he used the money from his early rap career to invest in a range of properties across Los Angeles.

"When I sold them, I made on each one of them $300,000 to $400,000 (£141,000 to £255,000).I stopped in my tracks and said, 'It can't be that easy'. But it was," he said.

He went on to offer advice to amateur renovators, which included adapting to an ever-changing real estate market, appealing to a wide demographic and using neutral colours to portray a welcoming property.

His advice echoes the sentiments of professional renovator Laura Kimball, who told the Baltimore Sun that conducting a renovation using a gradual approach could often save amateur interior designers money.
