'Use a humidifier' to protect wood flooring

Homeowners have been advised to protect their wood flooring from a lack of moisture by using a humidifier.

Writing for the LA Times, columnist Marshall Brain issued a warning regarding the dangers which cold and clear weather can pose to timber products and other items in a house.

He noted that wood flooring and other fixtures made from the material can be affected by dryness and this can cause them to shrink.

In addition, the lack of moisture can also be potentially harmful to people, causing dry skin, hair and chapped lips.

Mr Brain claimed that using a humidifier will fix the majority of these issues and explained how the device works.

"It puts moisture back into the air to bring the relative humidity in your home up to a comfortable range," he said.

WSLS recently issued similar guidance and cited research from Consumer Reports, which hailed the Air-O-Swiss model as its top-rated humidifier.
