Under-counter lighting can 'build on the design' of a kitchen

Renovators have been advised to consider under-counter lighting when making home improvement changes to their kitchen.

Responding to a reader query in The Star, interior design expert Debbie Travis claimed that under-counter lighting was both energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

She told of her years of torment at the hands of the "harsh ambience" produced by traditional fluorescent lighting before turning to warmer bulbs.

"Under-counter lighting truly builds on the design elements of any kitchen," she said.

Ms Travis went on to explain how it was practically helpful when preparing meals for the family.

She also discussed the increasing range of lights available to suit every home. In particular, Ms Travis recommended softer fluorescent bulbs and coloured LEDs as a great contrast to traditionally "harsh" kitchen lighting.

Her advice comes after renovation writer Carlomar Daoana declared the kitchen had usurped the living room as the "king of the interior" in a Manila Bulletin article last month.
