Two-thirds choosing to repaint homes

Two-thirds of householders who are looking to carry out home improvements choose to repaint their walls or add new wallpaper to a room.

New research from Halifax found that repainting walls is the most popular DIY project for Britons.

The second favourite work was carrying out improvements to a garden, with 37 per cent stating that this is their preference.

Buying a kitchen was said to be the most expensive home improvement a homeowner could make, with the average cost well over £6,500.

This is in contrast with the cost of replacing the central heating in a house, which now costs around £2,500, a drop of more than £500 in the last year.

Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: "More and more homeowners are picking up their brushes and paint and using their creativity to improve their surroundings."

Former Ground Force star Tommy Walsh recently told the Sun that home improvers should take their time when painting a room.
