'Take up the carpets', homeowners advised
Wood flooring can shine through in a property if homeowners remove their carpets, it has been claimed.
Writing for the Philadelphia Inquirer, property expert and columnist Alan Heavens suggested that those considering a significant renovation project should plan ahead and factor in all the potential costs.
He spoke to expert realtor Cheryl Miller of Long & Foster Real Estate, who offered a number of tips on how to improve the value of a home through DIY.
She claimed that there are a number of steps for homeowners to take to increase their house's monetary worth.
"I advise painting - paint is cheap - and taking up old carpets if there is hardwood underneath and a good, general cleaning," she said.
A Yahoo guide to taking up old carpets states that homeowners should be aware of the costs associated with the materials, removal charges and disposal fees when extracting their floor coverings.
