Summer fuels garden DIY projects
More householders carried out DIY projects in their gardens last month, according to the latest British Retail Consortium (BRC)-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor.
Outdoor DIY materials were one of the biggest improvers during June 2010, with sales values up 1.2 per cent across the board compared to the same period last year.
Stephen Robertson, director general at the BRC, stated that the growth is "decent", explaining that the warm summer weather encouraged people to spend more cash.
"The performance is better when you remember the comparison is with a similarly strong performance in a sunny June a year ago," he said.
Mr Robertson added that sales of televisions particularly increased over the course of the month, a rise that can be explained by the Fifa World Cup which has been taking place in South Africa.
The recent Confederation of British Industry Distributive Trades Survey discovered that spending on DIY materials had dropped during June 2010.
