'Small but effective changes' can save homeowners money.

Homeowners do not need to overhaul their house to become more energy efficient and save money on energy costs, according to one DIY expert.

Michael Holmes of the National Home Improvement Show believes that a healthy attitude to "affordable DIY eco solutions" can yield significant savings.

"Homeowners can also make small but effective changes to their life such as using a dishwasher, as it uses less water, leave the car at home [and] flush less," he said.

Mr Holmes' advice comes after a report from Sainsbury's Finance indicated that 20 per cent of personal loans from the first half of 2010 were used on home improvements.

He went on to explain the benefits of simple changes such as installing a boiler jacket and using "old fashioned" under-door snakes to provide basic insulation.

Homeowners were also advised to be aware of their water consumption and bear in mind the build-up of costs created by leaky taps and excessive flushing.
