Shabby chic DIY is 'charming'

Shabby chic decor is a new trend which strikes a "careful balance" between old and new which aims to be both functional and charming, according to one home improvement writer.

In a recent Helium article, Trenna Hiler spoke of the "adventure" of shabby chic DIY and recommended that others try their hand at pulling off the look.

"With shabby chic the goal may be to celebrate imperfections," she said. "Shabby chic is about mixing patterns, textures and colours."

Ms Hiler went on to state that colourful alterations to furnishings, such as wood flooring, old vases, wooden stools and pillows are a staple of the design trend.

She also promoted the value of hats as a "fun addition" to any renovator's shabby chic decor and suggested using them to hold plants or hanging them from chandeliers.

In a previous Helium article on the subject, writer Joan Collins suggested that, while it is possible to buy shabby chic items in stores, the real fun lies in self-made decorations.
