Self-builders are 'leading the way' in high-quality homes
Self-build projects have seen a boost in popularity due to plummeting land values and an increasing amount of available plots, one housing expert has revealed.
Manager of sales for self-build housing firm Potton Neil Horton claimed that there has never been a better time to take up self-building and that such properties are often superior to their traditional counterparts.
"Self-builders are leading the way when it comes to building high-quality, individual homes which serve to improve the integrity of the towns and villages in which they sit," he told the Daily Express.
Sainsbury's Finance predicted last month that it expects billions of pounds to be spent on home improvements in 2010, if the current DIY boom continues.
Mr Horton called for self-builders to be treated in a fairer way by local planning authorities, with particular regard to housing targets.
He went on to promote the benefits of self-build houses, which he claimed were often "higher in quality" than traditional homes, as well as being more environmentally sound.
