Salford householders to benefit from home improvements

Funding for home improvements to 700 residences in Salford has been protected.

As a result of the announcement, £5 million will now be spent on Salford's Decent Homes programme.

Later this year, work will begin on homes in areas such as Ordsall Lane, Spike Island, Racecourse and London Street.

Deborah McLaughlin, north-west director of the Homes and Communities Agency, said: "It's great that we have been able to confirm this investment for Salford. I am sure that these vital improvements will make a real difference to the lives of many local people."

The home improvements for Salford were proposed after Salix Homes, the housing management company for the city, was awarded a two-star rating in its Audit Commission inspection.

Work will include improvements to bathrooms and kitchens in the affected housing estates, as well as the installation of double glazing and loft insulation.

Around 220,000 people live in the city of Salford, which covers districts such as Irlam and Cadishead, Swinton and Pendlebury, Eccles and Worsley.
