RHS reveals gardening boom
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has found that gardening clubs country-wide are experiencing a surge in membership.
According to a recent survey conducted by the society, a gardening "renaissance" is occurring across the country.
The research was conducted by polling 100 of the RHS' affiliated gardening clubs and found that over 70 per cent saw their memberships increase or stabilise over the last year.
Many gardening clubs have been filled to capacity, leaving applicants wanting to join on waiting lists.
RHS spokesperson Stephanie Eynon claimed the results showed a surge of people joining, or in some cases forming their own gardening clubs.
She said: "People have been joining for a variety of reasons - from wanting to grow their own food and plants, to saving cash due to the credit crunch."
The study was conducted in the lead-up to the RHS' Dig Together Day, which will see gardening clubs across the country host community events with the aim of attracting more people to horticulture.
