Provide the right habitat for birds in your garden, says RSPB

Supporting the wildlife in your garden with the right type of habitat is the best method for attracting it in the long term, an expert has claimed.

Wildlife advisor for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Kirsi Peck said that gardeners seeking to attract birds and other wildlife should concentrate on making their garden amenable over a long period.

She suggested gardeners should plan ahead and put forward some easy tips such as planting spiky bushes to prevent cats from attacking nests inside.

Ms Peck said: "You don't need to pigeonhole 'wildlife gardening', but it could be something that you consciously do, like using as little chemicals as possible to allow the insects to feed."

She went on to warn gardeners to expect quiet periods during certain seasons and not to jump to conclusions about the lack of wildlife.

Her comments come in the wake of a report by the British Trust for Ornithology, which indicated Greenfinch populations were being decimated by the emergence of a new disease.
