Over-use of neutral colours on floors 'makes rooms feel cold and stark'
Larger rooms with floors, walls and ceilings which use too many neutral colours can come off as impersonal, a new guide has advised.
Writing in the Orlando Sentinel, Jean Patteson looked at some of the features which can significantly alter the feel of a larger room.
She advises creating "interest" in the kitchen space through the use of beams made from boards of dark wood, floors made from marble and using similar colour schemes to create "continuity" throughout the home.
Thinking ahead to create warmth in large-scale rooms takes "all the decorating tricks" a designer has, according to Ms Patteson.
Her advice echoes that of a recent Canadian Press article[,] which advised renovators that planning and research were the most vital part of any home improvement undertaking.
However, Ms Patteson also explained that the correct use of contrasting colours can often make larger spaces friendlier.
"If the walls, floor and ceiling were all off-white, the room would come off cold and stark," she said.
