Over-50s 'best equipped to deal with DIY disasters'

Over-50s are better placed than younger people to deal with a DIY emergency as they are far more likely to know a tradesman they can call, according to a report.

Research conducted by Saga Home Insurance also found that many older householders are still carrying out home improvements, but that many are now choosing to take on the work themselves rather than paying somebody else.

However, men over the age of 50 are far more confident in their DIY abilities, with almost a fifth stating they are happy carrying out DIY without expert help, compared to just five per cent of women.

DIY is most common in Scotland, the survey found, where 31 per cent of people do home improvements on their own.

Older people in Worcestershire are set to benefit from home improvements after the county council announced £300,000 worth of investments, with work to include fitting shelves and swapping lightbulbs for energy-efficient versions, reports the Tewkesbury Admag.
