More home improvers 'converting garages'
More and more householders are converting their garage into another room for their home, according to new research from Santander.
The banking giant found that more than one in ten Britons who have garages attached to their homes have converted them into areas such as a home office, a gym or a games room.
Phil Cliff, director of mortgages at Santander, explained that as modern cars are more robust and safe, more householders are happy to leave them on the driveway or on the street.
He explained that for a modest investment, a space could be created in an unused garage that is more suitable to the needs of a modern homeowner.
"For many homeowners, maximising their current space is a far more affordable and convenient option than moving home," he said.
This comes after Gail Prosser-Craig, an expert judge on DIY show Canada's Worst Handyman, told yourhome.ca that home improvers must have a realistic budget in mind before contacting a builder.
