Loft converters advised smoke alarm is needed
A smoke alarm is a requirement for any DIYers who convert their loft, an expert has noted.
David Snell, writing for the Daily Telegraph, stated that each floor of a property requires a smoke alarm to be placed within 7.5 metres of any habitable space.
He explained that these should be situated in the circulation area, adding: "These should be mains-operated - separately wired and fused back to the control unit - but with battery backup."
Mr Snell added that purchasing a fire extinguisher is a good idea for any home improver, although he said householders must be careful to ensure they choose the most suitable one for their property.
Loft conversions will also need a door to be added at the bottom of the staircase in order to meet fire safety regulations, he stated.
Last month, eco campaigner and television presenter James Strawbridge said home improvers should insulate their lofts, because this can save them money on their energy bills.
