'Insulate your wood flooring', homeowners warned

Homeowners have been advised of the benefits that insulating their wood flooring can bring.

Period wood floors are especially prone to draughts and a new Express and Star guide provides a number of ways for DIY enthusiasts to tackle the issue.

It claims that the easiest solution for insulating period wood floors is to get underneath the boards and lay the heat-trapping material from that vantage point.

However, it acknowledges this may not be practical for all homeowners and those who cannot gain access from underneath were advised to consider taking up the boards themselves.

"Alternatively, you could try filling the gaps between the boards to stop draughts coming up from below. You can use a number of materials for this," said the guide.

It went on to promote the use of thin strips of cork, wood or sawdust mixed with glue.

According to the Bonneville Power Administration, homeowners should equip themselves with protective gear, such as knee pads and non-slip shoes.
