Inspect your home from 'floor to roof' says Churchill

Many homeowners do not maintain their homes and face large repair bills as a result, according to the results of new research.

Insurance firm Churchill issued the warning after it found that just under 50 per cent of homeowners are failing to clear their gutters and downpipes, which can potentially cause a range of water damage problems.

Head of home insurance for Churchill Martin Scott advised that plenty of preventative maintenance can help to bring the costs of home repairs down.

"Do a top-to-toe inspection from the floor to the roof space. Look for signs of leaks in your attic, making sure that timbers are free from damp and woodworm," he said.

Last month, a study by Halifax Home Insurance showed that many of the UK's younger population lack very basic DIY skills.

Mr Scott also recommended that homeowners check that central heating and boilers are working during the summer months, instead of waiting for the weather to turn cold.
