'Infuse neutral patterns' into wood flooring

Homeowners seeking to imbue their property with retro style have been advised to use neutral patterns in their wood flooring.

Writing for the International Business Times, columnist Ronique Gibson claimed that every few decades the "world of design" makes a comeback and noted the increasing popularity of retro home decor.

She noted the staples of this type of style included bold patterns and colours and advised homeowners to try using large motifs on their walls.

Similarly, for those who want to opt for more subtle retro decor, Ms Gibson pointed to smaller prints and recommended the use of pastels and muted variations on bold colouring.

"Use patterns in smaller quantities, and infuse neutrals into furnishings, flooring and wall coverings. Mix and match solids and patterns to also play down big and bold retro styling," she said.

This comes after a recent Independent article claimed shabby chic and retro style are being forsaken in favour of clean-lined rustic decor in 2011.
