Indented nails 'can damage refinishing equipment' for wood floors

A homeowner facing refinishing worries has been given advice on how to care for his wood flooring.

Writing for the Boston Globe, correspondent Peter Hotton responded to a reader who wished to know how to safely refinish his wood floor, which a previous owner had nailed down in an effort to stop it squeaking.

However, despite attempts to remove the nails, the reader was only able to indent them and planned to use putty before going on to sand them.

Mr Hotton warned the reader of the range of problems posed by sanding a floor which has nails showing.

"Professionals might not sand a floor with indented nail heads for fear that even one protruding nail can damage [equipment]," he said. "If any of the nails can be removed, do so."

In a recent article for the Mirror, columnist Caroline Cook explored the many ways in which wood flooring has improved in terms of effect and durability over the years.
