Householders told how to pick good builders

Householders who want to carry out major home improvements but are worried about how to pick a builder have been given some tips.

David Snell of the Daily Telegraph stated that homeowners can avoid cowboy tradesmen by asking friends, family and neighbours for recommendations on the people who carried out work for them.

He added that property owners should always get quotations written down in case the builder tries to add extra fees on once the job has begun.

"An alarm should go off if you're asked for money up front," he warned.

"Remember, a builder pays for materials at the end of the month following the month of invoice."

Householders were also advised to offer to buy specialist materials themselves if the builder requests these, in order to avoid being ripped off.

In a previous article for the Daily Telegraph, the journalist told homeowners looking to buy a new boiler as part of home improvements to choose a regular rather than a combi boiler if their house is large.
