Homeowners 'choosing colourful flooring and furnishings'

The slowdown in the property market has persuaded homeowners to be more adventurous with their flooring choices, according to an interior design expert.

Julia Goodwin, editor of House Beautiful magazine, believes that a change in attitudes towards home ownership has encouraged people to think more about interior design.

Previously, homeowners had been happy to use neutral colours throughout their houses, as they only planned to keep them for a short space of time before moving up the property ladder.

However, the property market slowdown has meant people have to stay in their homes for much longer, which has prompted them to make bolder choices for their interior colour schemes.

Ms Goodwin explained that this has not meant people suddenly starting to spend big money on interior design, but they have begun to make changes to introduce more striking colours and patterns to their homes.

"People are actually keeping pieces of furniture that they have already bought or lived with and using rugs, cushions and flooring to actually give their home colour, energy and life," she said.

The expert added that patterned flooring has become particularly popular in recent times.ADNFCR-2810-ID-19537529-ADNFCR
