Home improvement projects 'require realistic budgets'

Householders who are looking into major home improvements this summer have been advised to have a realistic budget in mind before getting quotes from contractors.

Gail Prosser-Craig, an expert judge on DIY show Canada's Worst Handyman, stated that a little bit of commonsense can help a homeowner to keep a project under control.

Speaking to yourhome.ca, she advised property owners to take some time to think through exactly what they want from their home improvement projects before getting started.

Ms Prosser-Craig also advised homeowners to not just appoint the cheapest available contractor, as "you get what you pay for".

She said householders need to be honest with their contractor throughout their project to keep it on track, by explaining their budget and the look they are trying to achieve in their home.

This follows John Drengenberg, consumer safety director for Underwriters Laboratories, telling ABC News that homeowners carrying out DIY should keep a first aid kit close to hand, just in case there are any accidents. ADNFCR-2810-ID-19777820-ADNFCR
