Help for green homeowners 'needs to move up in scale'

Property owners who want to carry out home improvements to make their house more energy-efficient need more help from the government.

This is the view of councillor Nigel Murphy, executive member for the environment at Manchester City Council, who stated that the current measures in practice for aiding homeowners need to be stepped up in scale.

He said: "There is going to be a need for investment which will be challenging in the current economic climate but the retrofitting work on existing homes and buildings can be a major enterprise."

Mr Murphy added that not only would householders save money if they were offered incentives to green up their residence, it would help to create jobs in the construction sector.

This would also reduce the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere, Mr Murphy explained.

He was speaking after the coalition government outlined its energy plans in the Queen's Speech last month, stating that help will be given to businesses and homeowners who want to improve their energy efficiency.
