Hard flooring 'helps prevent allergic reaction'

Solid wood or laminate flooring should help one woman avoid experiencing health problems.

Lamika Tucker, 32, suffers from asthma, but her condition is being exacerbated by the carpet in the rental property in which she now lives.

Speaking to the Statesman, she revealed that she is partway through having the apartment redone.

However, she still needs to replace the carpet with an alternative such as laminate or solid wood flooring.

Ms Tucker told the newspaper that she has presented a doctor's note to the landlord saying it needs to be changed, but the owner has not yet carried out the work.

According to figures from charity group Asthma UK, about 5.4 million people in Britain are affected by the condition.

This means that about one in five households in the UK contain at least one person who suffers from asthma.

Figures from Asthma UK also show that more than a million of those with the condition are children.
