Green home uses £20 a month energy

An eco-friendly family home in Gloucestershire is so green that its occupants often have to pay only £20 per month for their energy bills.

During an interview with the Daily Telegraph, homeowner Tim Bawtree revealed how taking lots of environmentally-friendly measures had led to him and his wife - who live in Cheltenham with their two sons - paying next to nothing for utilities.

The house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, but the Bawtrees pay "never more than £40 a month and sometimes as little as £20" on their monthly energy bill.

In order to save so much in energy costs, the family has implemented several money saving ideas.

For example, the majority of their property is actually underground, which saves on heating bills but not at the expense of natural light due to its overhead skylights.

Michael Holmes, editor of Real Homes, stated recently that the cost of carrying out green home improvements is "no longer prohibitive".
