Green home improvers believe house value has increased

Householders have been told that carrying out green home improvements on their property can help them to increase the value of their residence.

According to Jan and George Hetherington, the money they have spent making their Stamford home greener has resulted in its value going up.

The couple have installed solar panels on the roof to produce electricity and a rainwater collection system to save money on water.

George told the Peterborough Evening Gazette that he believes his house is worth more after the work.

"It is an investment in the environment and in our future," he said. "Everyone should take responsibility for the legacy we are leaving behind."

The Hetheringtons have also replaced their freezer, washing machine and other white goods with low-energy equivalents, as well as buying a hybrid car.

A new energy bill from the government proposing to give householders support for green home improvements recently drew praise from the Great British Refurb Campaign.
