Green home improvements 'should be incentivised'

Green home improvements, such as underfloor heating, should be made more appealing to the public, it has been suggested.

At the Great British Refurb event, author and presenter of Channel 4's Grand Designs Kevin McCloud said homeowners having to redo inefficient insulation within a decade or two will only add to the nation's carbon burden.

He claimed that now is a "golden window" of opporunity for research to "refine the mechanism" of green home improvements, which could include sustainable wood flooring.

"We have to make this hugely appealing - we have to incentivise people to want to do this. It isn't good enough to just say, 'You have to'," Mr McCloud said.

He went on to explain that the looming deadline of the Green Deal's launch in 2012 left little time to ensure that the technologies which green home improvements are dependent on can be adapted to fit every type of UK home.

The Great British Refurb event was organised by Building magazine and held online to provide concise advice on green home improvements.
