Government 'must protect green home improvement spending'

The new coalition government formed by the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats must protect spending allocated to green home improvements.

Friends of the Earth stated that this should be one of the main priorities of the new prime minister David Cameron and his chancellor George Osborne.

Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins added that a low-carbon society could be created by the new administration.

He said: "Developing the UK's vast renewable energy potential and stamping out energy waste will create new green jobs and industries, increase energy security and help end the scourge of fuel poverty."

Mr Atkins was speaking after Mr Osborne announced he is to hold the first Budget of the coalition government's time in power next month.

He stated that he will hold an emergency Budget on June 22nd 2010.

Mr Atkins explained that the emergency Budget is a crucial opportunity for the chancellor to deliver on Mr Cameron's promise that his government will be the greenest ever.
