'Get it in writing' advise Australian couple

An Australian couple have shared their top renovation tip to help other homeowners avoid the same pitfalls they encountered.

Alexandra and Richard of Bronte in Sydney spoke to Your Mortgage.com about the DIY nightmares they faced during their first renovation project.

Following the purchase of their first home in 2007, the couple immediately undertook an expansive renovation project and encountered a range of difficulties throughout.

Their number one tip for renovators is to get professionals to quote the job in writing, ensuring as much detail as possible is included. This served them well after one contractor claimed there was a variation to previous plans.

"But because we had drawings and an agreed scope of works, and a written quotation from the contractor, we were able to prove that these variations were unfounded," Alexandra said.

Earlier in the month, insurance firm Churchill warned that many UK homeowners were failing to carry out adequate preventative maintenance and only addressing problems when something goes wrong.
