'Get a background check' before seeking building materials online
DIY enthusiasts have been advised to check the reputation and history of an online source before hiring an contractor or buying building materials on the internet.
In a recent Money Magazine article, Josh Garskof examined the pros and cons of turning to online retail for home improvement supplies
"There is one key step you can do online- a background check. Get a report about a contractor's licensing, bonding, insurance, bankruptcy, civil judgments and credit rating," he advised.
His warning reflects the sentiments of Jondi Gumz, who examined the plights of several home improvement enthusiasts who had been stung by misleading contractors in a recent article for the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
When seeking materials online, Mr Garskof highlighted the significant discounts that e-commerce could bring, with some companies offering up to 50 per cent off for online customers.
However, he was quick to note that savings made from internet shopping "could turn into cost overruns" if something went awry with an order.
