Gardeners 'will be angered by hose pipe ban'

Gardeners living in the north-west of England are likely to be angered by the decision from United Utilities to impose a hose pipe ban in the region.

This is the view of Kris Collins, gardening editor at Amateur Gardening magazine, who stated that many will be surprised by the announcement, especially when parts of the area were flooded last year.

"The vast majority of gardeners that I have spoken to already conserve water and don't need to be told to do so," he said. "Very few people actually use a sprinkler now."

As a result of the ban, he has recommended growing plants such as lavender and bloom, because these require only a little watering to prosper in a garden.

Mr Collins added that gardeners could also use bath or shower water on their flowers if they save it, as this is unlikely to damage any plants.

The hose pipe ban is the first to be enforced in the north-west of England for more than a decade.
